Chocolate-Hazelnut Smoothie (Sugar-Free, Dairy-Free)

Tilth : Creating Fertile Ground for Good Health : tilthforhealth.com

A quick one today: This smoothie is sorta like a much healthier, banana-tinged version of a Nutella milkshake, especially if you use the coconut milk (plus some water). Delicious, right?

Chocolate-Hazelnut Smoothie

1 small organic banana, sliced
1/2-1 cup unsweetened milk alternative (hemp works well; hazelnut runs with the theme; coconut milk + water will make it like a killer-rich milkshake)
4 dates, pitted (or more to make it sweeter)
2 tablespoons natural hazelnut butter
1 1/2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
5 ice cubes

Combine all ingredients in a powerful blender. Puree until smooth. Enjoy.

  1. wow, i want to read that story! I love the opener, and how wonderful that you know it’s all inside you somewhere. i might have to try this date smoothie, although not a fan of hazelnut so perhaps almond butter instead. yum!

  2. I’m bummed your attempt at Nutella didn’t quite work out as planned, but the shake looks amazing! And Penzey’s cocoa is unbeatable–richness over sweetness is definitely where it’s at.

  3. So excited that you’re writing! Woohoo! Sometimes that first step is the hardest. Good luck with that and with the 60 recipes/60 days.

Can it be? Nazis prompted one of the greatest culinary inventions of modern times?! Incredible!

  5. It has always seemed to me that I get the best fiction ideas when I have no time to sit down and write. When I’m off during the summer, I sit with a blank page and draw pictures. It’s funny how that works. The lines you put here completely hooked me in a second — that massage is a fine literary investment indeed.

I’m totally trying this smoothie with peanut butter, almond milk, and coffee (so technically not this smoothie, but its inspiration) the minute I get home from work today. I’m so burnt out on green smoothies that I hope a faux milkshake will get me back into the swing.

  6. WOW!!!! You are really on a roll — your creativity inspires me so much ….

  7. Mmmm Nutella (said with Homer Simpson voice) It’s such a nice treat! The challenge is to not eat it all in one sitting…I plead the 5th;)!

  8. ok, I love nutella, but here’s the scoop. you make the nut butter, then you STIR in the agave, and it doesn’t glop. overmix and you get a gross past-y mix. I don’t know why that is, but if you follow the rules, no one gets hurt.

    love the new blog.

Wow, I was recently looking lovingly at the Nutella in the local grocery store. I spent four wonderful summers in Germany and that was a part of my breakfast pretty much every day! We are gf/cf/sf so I am going to have to try this recipe since the organic one has soy. Thanks so much for sharing how you adapted it.

You know, I actually apprieciate the trials that didn’t quite work out as much as the recipes of the winners. The smoothie sounds good. And I quite agree that almost everything from Penzey’s will make anything taste great.
